Liverpool have been “studying options at left-back” with Ajax’s Jorrel Hato and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez among the potential targets, according to The Times reporter Paul Joyce.
The journalist, who is very reliable when it comes to the Reds, claims that the club are seriously contemplating reinforcing the left-hand side of defence this summer.
Current first-choice Andy Robertson has had a poor season by his own high standards and, with the Scotland captain having less than 18 months remaining on his current deal, a replacement is being sought.
Based on what is being said, though, it doesn’t look like the Merseysiders have settled on a number one target yet.
Hato may be a better choice to replace van Dijk
While the 18-year-old has caught the eye with his performances at left-back for Ajax this season, many believe that his long-term future lies in the centre of defence.
Some have touted Hato as a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk. The hype around the teenager is significant. He has already been targeted by Arsenal before signing a new deal twelve months ago and there is growing speculation about his future.
Slot is aware of Kerkez’s abilities
If Liverpool want a like-for-like replacement for Robertson then an approach for the Bournemouth left-back seems like the better option.
Head coach Arne Slot clearly rates the player, having effectively asked Ryan Gravenberch to manmark Kerkez during the Reds’ recent game against the Cherries.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has also backed his former club to make a move for the Hungarian international.
Manchester United have been mentioned as a potential suitor for Kerkez in recent months, although their decision to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in January may have led them to end their interest.
