Liverpool are no longer “actively” pursuing Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
The German international has been linked with a switch to Anfield when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Kimmich has yet to make a decision on whether he will remain at Bayern and sign an extension but it appears the Reds have opted to end their interest in the player.
The explanation given by Plettenberg’s sources is that the Merseysiders are already “overstaffed” in midfield and they are looking at recruiting “other profiles”.
Liverpool would be missing out on a “phenomenal” talent
Kimmich has been praised for his performances this season. The 29-year-old has been integral to Bayern’s title challenge, having played the full 90 minutes in all 18 league games so far.
The player has earned the plaudits of many over the years, including former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who once described him as “absolutely phenomenal”.
Based on Plettenberg’s information, though, it doesn’t look like he will be plying his trade at Anfield if he moves on a free transfer this summer.
Kimmich could still move to the Premier League
It is believed that Manchester City are very much in the frame to secure the German’s signature, along with Barcelona.
With Arsenal reportedly set to snap up one of Liverpool’s other midfield targets, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, many fans will be left wondering who the Reds will go after to strengthen their options in the middle of the park.
Ryan Gravenberch has been excellent since being converted into a No.6 by head coach Arne Slot but he can’t play every game. Cover is required for the Dutchman but it seems as if no signing will be brought in soon to address the issue.
