Liverpool Have Identified 3 Centre Back Targets (Including Chelsea Star) If Gomez Leaves

Liverpool have “pinpointed” three potential replacements for Joe Gomez if the defender leaves Anfield before the transfer deadline next Friday, according to GiveMeSport.

The website claims that the Reds are seriously considering strengthening their options at centre-back during the final week of the summer window.

Sepp van den Berg has completed his £25m switch to Brentford and there is still a decent chance that Gomez will follow him out of the door.

The England international did not make the matchday squad for the 2-0 win over Ipswich Town last weekend and, if he doesn’t feature in today’s game versus Brentford, there will be even more speculation about his future.

What has Arne Slot said about Gomez?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Slot claimed that the 27-year-old’s absence against Ipswich was due to fitness reasons:

“He didn’t play a lot in the Euros and when he came back in the first sessions he couldn’t train the whole session so we had to manage his load and that was also a bit [of] a reason why he wasn’t in the team on Saturday.”

Who have Liverpool identified to replace Gomez?

GiveMeSport report that the Reds are keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie, RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill.

The first two names have been regularly mentioned over the past few months, but the fact that the Merseyside club are considering reviving their interest in Colwill is somewhat surprising.

While the recruitment department are known to be big fans of the centre-back, he is a regular starter for Chelsea. The defender also signed a long-term contract not that long ago.

Unless they have heard from the player’s camp that he is keen on a move, it would be a shock if Liverpool decided to make a late bid for Colwill.
