Liverpool reportedly missed on signing Danish international Jesper Lindstrom in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

In an interview, Lindstrom said he was a ‘Liverpool fan’ and that that a move to Anfield would have been a ‘madly fascinating experience’ – but he also seemed to indicate that he believed he would not be a regular first team starter had he made the jump to Merseyside.

Instead, Lindstrom did not pursue a move to Liverpool, opting to pursue a move to Serie A Champions – he joined them on August 29 for a fee of around £26 million.

In a quote featured on Romano’s Twitter feed, Lindstrom said: “Liverpool wanted me, I am a Liverpool fan so it would’ve been a madly fascinating experience… but would it have been an intelligent move? I am at an age now where I have to play football.”

Would Jesper Lindstrom have been a good signing for Liverpool?

Lindstrom is a superlatively talented attacking player, capable of playing on either wing and as a number ten. In this sense, he would have been an excellent utility option where the final third of the pitch is concerned.

On the other hand, Lindstrom’s concerns that he would not have been a regular name on the team sheet are warranted. The Reds already have several talented attacking players, especially in the wide positions – Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah are just a handful of examples.

Could Lindstrom have been a replacement for Mohamed Salah?

There was talk of Salah leaving Liverpool in the summer transfer window, following reports of big-money interest from Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League.

Nevertheless, we believe that Lindstrom would have been a poor replacement for the Egyptian international – at least, from a stylistic perspective.

Salah is a lightning-quick, explosive winger with excellent ball control and an acute eye for goal – while Lindstrom can match Salah’s dribbling ability, he is more of a wide playmaker than a natural goalscorer.

Last season, while playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, Lindstrom made 38 appearances in total – he scored nine goals, alongside four assists in all competitions.
