RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda says he is not interested in reports linking him with the likes of Liverpool.
The Reds, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been mentioned as potential destinations for the Belgian international, who has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season. However, the forward says he is happy to remain in Germany:
“Everyone talks about the clubs that want me. But I don’t focus on that. I feel good here since day one and I have a contract here. I don’t have to worry about where I’ll be in a year or two.”
“In five years something might be different. I want to be one of the best strikers in the world. But I’m doing so well here, I don’t know why I should think about other clubs.”
Openda has only recently moved clubs
It should be noted that the 24-year-old only joined RB Leipzig from Lens for a fee worth an initial €38m last summer so it is pretty understandable why he wouldn’t be interested in moving teams so soon.
However, clubs are aware that Openda does have an €80m (£70m) release clause in his contract and, considering his form this campaign, a team may well be tempted to trigger it in the next transfer window.
Do Liverpool need another forward?
Openda is almost exclusively deployed as a central striker which is not a position that the Reds are short of options in. Not only is Darwin Nunez best suited to playing there, but Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota are also very capable in the No.9 role.
If the Merseyside club do pursue a forward this summer, it will likely be a replacement for Mo Salah on the right wing. The Egyptian international will have a year left on his contract at the end of the season.
