Barcelona are expected to make another “approach” for Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The decision made by Nico Williams to sign an eight-year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao means that Barca are now seeking alternatives.
While Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford is one of the options under consideration, the La Liga club’s sporting director Deco is said to favour a move for Diaz.
An enquiry was made for the Colombian international last month but the Reds made it clear that the player was not for sale.
Diaz’s stance on leaving Anfield
Reports suggest that the 28-year-old’s representatives are not happy with how Liverpool have handled negotiations over a new contract.
Diaz currently has less than two years remaining on his current deal, and while the player would be open to extending his stay on Merseyside, it is believed he wants a significant pay rise.
Despite talks having reached an impasse, though, the Reds are not willing to sell him for a low fee. They are thought to be holding out for more than £70m.
Liverpool have been looking at potential replacements
While the official stance on Diaz is that he isn’t available for transfer, the club are still seemingly eyeing possible alternatives if he were to leave.
Lyon’s Malick Fofana is definitely one of those being targeted. The Belgian is said to have an asking price of around €60m (£51m), although his club’s demotion to France’s second tier may lead to them sanctioning his sale for a lower amount.
AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has also been linked in the Italian media, although those rumours have gone quiet in recent weeks. For now, Diaz remains a Liverpool player but it looks like Barca will ramp up their efforts to sign him over the coming days.
