Liverpool are interested in signing Lyon winger Malick Fofana, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.
Catalan publication Mundo Deportivo reported earlier this week that the 20-year-old was being lined up as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz. Speaking to Anfield Index, Tavolieri confirmed that the Reds are fans of Fofana, although he played down suggestions that he is a top target for the Merseyside club :
“I can tell you that it’s true that LFC are interested in Malick Fofana, but at the moment it’s not a priority case.”
Lyon are said to be demanding around €30m (£25m) for the winger, which is not a massive fee for a player of his potential.
What do Liverpool fans need to know about Fofana?
The forward came through the ranks of Belgium Pro League side Gent, making his senior debut against Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup in July 2022.
Fofana went on to make 64 appearances for the first team before securing a €19.5m switch to Lyon in the January 2024 transfer window.
This season, the wide man has racked up 11 goals and 6 assists in 41 games for the Ligue One side, having also been handed his first cap for Belgium at senior level. He played the final few minutes of a Nations League fixture against Italy back in October.
Wirtz’s rumours proved to be accurate
It should be pointed out that Tavolieri was cited by none other than Fabrizio Romano when reports emerged that Florian Wirtz wanted to join Liverpool.
For that reason, fans should take notice when he says that Fofana is on the Reds’ radar too. The fact that the player is Belgian is also another factor to consider as Tavolieri is based in that country. It’s definitely a transfer story to keep a close eye on.
