Liverpool remain interested in signing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, according to BBC reporter Sami Mokbel.
The journalist has a strong track record when it comes to accuracy, and he claims that the Reds will look to bring in the England international if his asking price drops.
At the moment, Palace are still holding out for £40m, despite the fact that Guehi has less than a year left on his contract.
Mokbel says Arne Slot’s side are not willing to pay that much for the defender so a deal is not advancing as things stand.
Guehi does have other suitors
Chelsea, Newcastle (who tried to sign him last summer) and Tottenham are said to have made enquiries for the 25-year-old over the last couple of months.
However, at the moment, it appears Palace have not received an offer which satisfies their demands. Guehi, meanwhile, has given no indication that he is willing to sign a new deal so it is possible that he could stay and leave Selhurst Park on a free transfer next year.
The Liverpool target has been praised for his performances
Speaking during the European Championships last summer, then England manager Gareth Southgate paid tribute to Guehi:
“He’s been exceptional. We obviously lose him now for the next game, but he’s a young defender that we’ve had enormous belief in, and he’s justified that with his performances in this tournament.”
Guehi went on to have a strong season for Palace, helping them win the FA Cup by keeping a clean sheet against Manchester City in the final. Based on his contract situation, though, it seems he is now seeking a new challenge.
Whether he will end up at Anfield may depend on whether Palace reduce their valuation before the end of the transfer window.
