“My Understanding…” – Romano Issues Verdict On Reports That Liverpool Are Plotting £70M Transfer Hijack

Liverpool have not stepped up their interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Writing in his Daily Briefing column, Romano said that the Reds have kept tabs on the England international but they have not, at this stage, entered the race with Newcastle to secure the player’s services:

“My understanding is that there is nothing concrete yet for Marc Guehi to Liverpool. Appreciation for the player has been there since February but there have been no bids as of tonight. Newcastle’s interest in Guehi remains after bids rejected, but now Palace sold Joachim Andersen to Fulham, so it’s not going to be easy.”

As Romano points out, one of the big obstacles that Liverpool would need to overcome (if they were to buy Guehi) is his asking price.

The former Chelsea player is reportedly valued at around £70m (£65m + £5m in add-ons) by Palace, and they have shown no signs of softening their stance.

Liverpool have considered signing a centre-back

While Guehi may be deemed too expensive, there is still a chance that Arne Slot’s side will reinforce the centre of defence before the transfer window shuts.

The club wanted to bring in Leny Yoro earlier this summer but he eventually joined Manchester United instead. Reports have also suggested that the likes of Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio and Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie have been watched.

Gomez’s departure may force the club into action

It is believed that several Premier League clubs are targeting Joe Gomez. Aston Villa, Chelsea, West Ham, Brentford and even Newcastle have been mentioned as potential suitors.

If the 27-year-old were to leave Anfield in the coming days, Liverpool would have to recruit a replacement ahead of the deadline. Things could be set to heat up in the transfer market for the Reds.
