Arsenal legend Ray Parlour claims that Liverpool will boost their chances of retaining the Premier League title if they secure the services of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
The Reds are believed to be in talks to sign the 25-year-old, but there was also suggestions that he could move back to his former team, Chelsea. Speaking about Guehi’s future, Parlour said it would be “another hammer blow” for Liverpool’s rivals if the player ends up at Anfield:
“He’s been brilliant at Palace. Palace don’t want to lose him, but they are a selling club. They’re realistic and they might have to sell one or two of their players, but from Chelsea’s point of view, they’re getting a very, very, very good player.”
“£40million, that’s the rate these days. Everybody’s £40million at least and upwards. If Liverpool get him, that will be another hammer blow for a lot of clubs who are trying to go for the title.”
Liverpool are hoping to get him for less than £40m
Reports suggest that Arne Slot’s side have already agreed personal terms with Guehi but they are not willing to meet Palace’s asking price.
The BBC report that £35m plus add-ons could well be enough to sign the England international before the transfer window shuts on September 1st.
Guehi could wait a year and sign for free
At the moment, it appears that there are two likely outcomes: Palace agree to lower their demands and the defender moves to Anfield now or, alternatively, the move is delayed to next summer and he makes the switch on a free transfer.
Eagles chairman Steve Parish has already stated that the second scenario is not acceptable for his club, having allowed Joachim Andersen to leave in a similar manner previously. You do feel an agreement will be reached over the coming days and weeks.
