Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has backed Mo Salah after he made comments regarding his contract situation at Liverpool.
Salah told the media after Liverpool’s 3-2 win against Southampton last week that he was “probably more out than in” as Liverpool hadn’t yet offered him a new contract.
The attacker is having one of his best seasons under Arne Slot as he is now the Premier League’s top scorer with 13 goals. He also has the second-most assists in the league with eight.
Salah has helped propel Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and the Champions League table by the start of December. They also just came off a 2-0 win against rivals Manchester City.
Jamie Carragher criticised Salah for his comments and said that he was being ‘selfish’ on Sky Sports, however former Reds winger Jermaine Pennant has clapped back at Carragher backing Salah.
Pennant told us alongside Mega Dice: “I don’t think he was selfish. Look what he’s doing. He’s scoring goals left, right, centre, he’s assisting. He has every right to come out and say ‘I’m not being offered a contract’, he’s just stating the facts.
“Liverpool should offer him everything he wants with a one year extension. Just give it and then, see out this season. Next season, see how it goes. I’m sure Saudi Arabia will be coming for him regardless, and maybe get a fee next season. But for now, just give him a new contract.
“Because to lose a player like that on a free, considering what he’s doing is blasphemy.”
Mo Salah has interest from Saudi Arabia
Pennant’s comments allude to the fact that Salah has already attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League as Al-Itihad offered Liverpool £150m for the attacker which was rejected in 2023.
Recent reports have emerged that Saudi side Al-Hilal are now keen on signing the Egyptian and are keeping close tabs on his contract situation with Liverpool.
Either way, the Reds will need to make a decision on Salah as soon as possible in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer window.
