Ex-Liverpool defender Markus Babbel has named Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown as one of two young Bundesliga left-backs that his former club should target this summer.
Speaking to Makthavare, Babbel said the Reds could “provide competition” for the ageing Andy Robertson by going after Brown or Borussia Monchengladbach’s Lukas Ullrich:
“Liverpool don’t need to replace Robertson in the summer but they do need a new back-up left-back. I’m not sure Kostas Tsimikas is good enough for Liverpool or to put Robertson under the pressure that he needs. Robertson needs to be challenged and he knows Tsimikas is not good enough, he knows he’s not a danger to him, so Liverpool need to bring in a new left-back.
“Nathaniel Brown at Eintracht Frankfurt and Lukas Ullrich at Borussia Monchengladbach are two young left-backs in Germany with great potential that Liverpool could look at this summer to provide competition for Robertson. It may not have been Robertson’s best campaign this year, but next season with the right competition, he will be a different player again.”
Brown has been linked with a move to the Premier League
Last week, it was reported that scouts from Arsenal, Manchester City and West Ham had observers watching Frankfurt’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Tottenham.
As well as scouting other players, including Hugo Ekitike and Hugo Larsson, all three teams were said to be keeping an eye on Brown’s performance.
Liverpool are pursuing another left-back
While the Reds have not been directly linked with Brown, Babbel is correct to say that his former team are likely to reinforce their options on the left-hand side of defence this summer.
The current frontrunner to be signed is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. However, the Hungarian international could cost as much as £45m, and there will be competition from both City and Real Madrid.
Sporting director Richard Hughes originally signed the fullback for the Cherries so he will be hoping that his connections, along with the player’s friendship with Dominik Szoboszlai, will help win the battle for his signature.
