Liverpool Backed To Challenge London Rivals As Journalist Claims Reds Are The Club To “Keep An Eye” On For £49M Winger

Liverpool are the team to “keep an eye” on in the race for Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, according to the Daily Mail reporter Lewis Steele.

Speaking on TikTok (quotes via This is Anfield), Steele said there is a chance that the Reds will revive their interest in the Spanish international:

“I think Liverpool will sign a striker and let’s see maybe a wide forward too. Keep an eye on Nico Williams.”

There is said to be a €58m (£49m) release clause in Williams’ contract, which makes him a tempting target for the Merseysiders and other teams.

Liverpool will have rivals for the forward’s signature

Arsenal are believed to have held talks with Williams’ representatives over the past month or so. The Gunners (like Liverpool) considered signing him last summer following his exploits for Spain at Euro 2024.

Chelsea have also been linked with the 22-year-old on and off. A lot may hinge on who can agree personal terms with the player. Some reports suggest that his entourage have issued salary demands in excess of £400,000 a week. If those claims are accurate, it would put off Arne Slot’s side from making an approach.

Williams’s arrival may depend on who leaves Anfield

At the moment, the Reds have more than enough options on the left flank – Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Federico Chiesa can all play there if required.

However, the latter two have been linked with exits. Diaz has two years left on his contract but negotiations over a new deal have stalled. The Colombian may leave for the right price.

Chiesa is clearly not rated by Slot so there is a decent chance that he will return to Italy. The pair’s departures would pave the way for someone like Williams to be brought in.
