Romano Claims “Liverpool Director” Has Already Watched £42M Rated Transfer Target “Many Times”

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is a massive fan of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on Playback (quotes via TBR), Romano said that Hughes and the Reds are very aware of the player’s situation but they have yet to formalise their interest:

“Riccardo Calafiori my friend as I told you, many clubs are pushing. There is interest from many clubs, I already told you, Liverpool director Richard Hughes, when he was the director of Bournemouth, he watched him many times.

“So they already know the situation of Calafiori and the player so well but still haven’t presented any bid.”

Liverpool will have to see off competition from multiple clubs to sign the player

Juventus were initially frontrunners for Calafiori, having reached an agreement with the player back in May, but it appears it is now an open race for the centre-back’s signature.

Plenty of other Premier League teams, in addition to Arne Slot’s side, have been credited with an interest. The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle and West Ham are also known to be keeping close tabs on the Italian international.

Calafiori’s asking price has increased

It was originally reported in the Italian media that Bologna would be willing to sell the 22-year-old for around €40m (£34m) but the player’s performances at the European Championships have gained him plenty of admirers.

It is believed that Calafiori could now fetch €50m (£42m). Considering the centre-half’s talent, there will still be a number of clubs tempted to meet their valuation.

As Romano says, though, Liverpool haven’t bitten the bullet yet. That could change after the Euros are over. The defender is currently focused on playing for his country and he is likely to make a decision on his future following the tournament.
