Liverpool and Chelsea are keeping close tabs on Santos winger Robinho Jr, according to reports.
The Daily Mail claim that the son of the former Manchester City player is being watched on a regular basis by Reds’ scout Dassler Marques.
Members of Chelsea’s South American recruitment department have also been in the stands for Santos games as they weigh up a move for Robinho.
The 17-year-old has only played 3 senior matches so far, but it is believed that Neymar has taken the player under his wing.
At the start of this year, the 33-year-old returned to Santos after a spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal. He had two injury-hit seasons in the Middle East, making just 7 appearances in total, but he has been playing more regularly over the past 9 months.
What do fans need to know about Robinho Jr?
The forward is two-footed so he is equally comfortable playing on either flank. He can also be deployed as a striker if needed.
Robinho’s best displays so far have come at Under-20 level. He has scored goals for Santos in the Brazilian Under 20 Championships, as well as the Copinha – Brazil’s equivalent of the FA Youth Cup.
Liverpool can sign him in January
Brazilian players are not allowed to go abroad before they turn 18, but Robinho Jr’s 18th birthday is in December, so he will be able to move to Europe when the next transfer window opens.
The fact that the winger has very limited experience of first-team football suggests that the Reds and other clubs may hold off from making an offer for now.
However, it’s clear that the Merseyside club’s scouts believe Robinho Jr is a very promising talent. It remains to be seen, though, whether he ends up making the switch to Anfield.
