OH Leuven defender Roggerio Nyakossi has reacted to reports linking him with a move to Liverpool
Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad claim that the Reds are keen on signing the Switzerland Under 21 international, and when asked about the rumours before Leuven’s match against Royal Antwerp, the centre-back admitted he was flattered by the interest:
“I focus on the rest of the season and the super important game Sunday… Of course, it’s always fun when teams are interested of that calibre.”
Het Nieuwsblad say that Nyakossi is expected to leave Leuven this summer as he is closing in on the final year of his contract. He is also very “open” to joining the current Premier League champions.
What do Liverpool fans need to know about the player?
The defender came through the ranks of Servette, going on to make his senior debut against FC Basel during a 5-1 defeat in August 2021.
Nyakossi would play just 5 more first-team games before he was sold to Marseille for €2m in the summer of 2022. The Swiss centre-half made 30 appearances for the club’s B team in France’s fifth tier, but he never played for the senior side.
After three years, the 22-year-old left to join Belgian Pro League side Leuven back in July last year for €800,000. He has played 20 games in all competitions so far this season.
Marseille have the edge in the battle for Nyakossi
Het Nieuwsblad report that the centre-back’s former club do have a “buyback” option on the player. It means the Ligue One outfit are the ones who will decide whether he returns to the Stade Velodrome or not this summer.
Liverpool’s interest is somewhat surprising considering Nyakossi’s lack of experience at the highest level, but they clearly feel that he has potential.
