Liverpool will make an opening offer that is “lower than” £40m for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

The Belgian reporter has been keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old’s situation, providing regular updates on his future, and he claims that both the Reds and Chelsea have been speaking to the player’s entourage. However, only Jurgen Klopp’s side are likely to make a formal bid.

It does look as if Liverpool will attempt to lowball Southampton with their first proposal and they could be playing a dangerous game, considering the amount of interest Lavia is receiving from other teams.

In addition to Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United are known to be keen on signing the Belgian international so going in with a low offer isn’t exactly the best plan in the world.

Liverpool are the club best positioned to make an approach now

While there are a number of teams interested in Lavia, it should be noted that none of the Reds’ rivals are currently ready to table offers.

Chelsea are focused on getting a deal in place for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, Arsenal are working on the transfers of Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber, while United are pursuing a new keeper.

Getting the approval of Lavia could help in negotiations

Tavolieri also mentions that the Reds are “close” to getting a “green light” from the Lavia himself and, if the midfielder does make Anfield his preferred destination, it could help the Merseyside club secure his signature for a lower fee.

While Jurgen Klopp’s side are hoping to a deal closer to £40m, the Saints want £50m, with the main reason being that Lavia’s previous club, Manchester City, have a substantial sell-on clause.

Getting Lavia’s club to sell the teenager for a more reasonable amount may only be possible if he is dead set on a switch to Merseyside. However, there is always a danger that another team could swoop in and simply pay the asking price. It would be wise for Liverpool not to drag out negotiations for too long.
