Former Manchester United and England star Owen Hargreaves believes Liverpool “will” sign a new No.6 despite the form of Ryan Gravenberch.
The Dutchman was named Player of the Match for his performance against Wolves on Saturday night and, although Hargreaves says he is a big fan of Gravenberch, he doesn’t believe the Reds can win the title with him as a holding midfielder.
“I think he is a brilliant midfield player, he is a box-to-box, depending on who you play. But I think in a big game, in a one-off game, to go and win the Premier League or the Champions League, I think you need a specialist. Liverpool showed that with Fabinho or Manchester City showed that with Rodri.”
“I still think they will address his position. But credit Gravenberch, he has grabbed his chance and that’s all you need. That’s what you need as a player, you need someone to trust you and he has proven it. I still think tougher tests will come. I love what he is doing, but I still think they will go and get somebody.”
Gravenberch has been up to the task up so far
While it is true that Arne Slot’s side have not gone up against a genuine title contender like Manchester City or Arsenal yet, Gravenberch has done more than enough to suggest he can play as the lone 6 at the highest level.
The Netherlands international is not a specialist, as Hargreaves is keen to point out, but his defensive numbers have been eye-catching since his move into a deeper lying role.
Who could Liverpool sign?
There are suggestions that the Reds could revive their interest in Martin Zubimendi. Real Sociedad have been struggling since the beginning of the season and the Spaniard may have a change of heart about staying in San Sebastian.
Atalanta’s Ederson has been offered up as a potential alternative. It is believed that the Merseyside club did contact the Brazilian’s agents earlier this year.
