Liverpool hold a “strong, strong interest” in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to Radio Kiss Kiss (via Anfield Watch).
The Naples-based radio station claim that the Reds may try to buy the Nigerian international even if the player signs a contract extension.
Osimhen’s current deal has 20 months left to run but negotiations have stalled after relations soured between the player and his club over a TikTok video.
The club’s official account mocked the striker after missing a penalty against Bologna, prompting the Serie A champions to make a formal apology.
Discussions over extending Osimhen’s have not resumed since then and there is now speculation that the 24-year-old could leave Italy in January or at the end of the season.
Other teams are targeting Osimhen
Both Chelsea and Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the forward, following rumours that he could move teams in the New Year.
Real Madrid have also been mentioned as potential suitors as they look for a long-term replacement for Karim Benzema.
Liverpool would have to break their transfer record
Despite the short amount of time left on Osimhen’s contract, reports suggest that Napoli could still hold out for a fee in the region of £120m.
With the Merseyside club’s record transfer standing at £85m, the Reds would have to pay substantially more in order to sign Osimhen. After bidding £110m for Moises Caicedo in the summer, though, that isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.
There are question marks over why Jurgen Klopp’s side would spend so much on another forward, considering the wealth options that the club have already but, if Mo Salah does leave for Saudi Arabia next year, a replacement would be needed.
Osimhen does play a different position to the Egyptian King, but he could be capable of matching his goal record.
