Lyon Ace Admits Liverpool Transfer Talk Is “Flattering”

Lyon winger Maxwel Cornet has admitted to being interested in a move to Liverpool.

The Reds have reportedly watched Lyon on a number of occasions this season, with Tanguy Ndombele, Houssem Aouar and Memphis Depay all being looked at.

Liverpool’s interest in Cornet hasn’t been that widely talked about but the 22-year-old has become unsettled at Lyon after talks over a new contract stalled. When speaking about his situation, he mentioned the Reds’ interest:

“I did not say I wanted to leave. We met the president [Jean-Michel Aulas] in January, and I said I wanted to extend [my contract], but talks were not successful.”

“Liverpool are a big club, any links are flattering. I’m under contract until 2021, but you never know in football so we’ll see.”

Cornet’s season at Lyon only really got going in the final month of the campaign. Manager Bruno Genesio has only started the Ivorian 15 times this season, and he had managed just one goal in Ligue One heading into the back end of April.

However, six goals and three assists in his final four league games meant he finished the campaign really strongly. Whether such a purple patch of form would encourage Liverpool into making a bid for the winger this summer, we shall have to wait and see.
