Merson Expects Nerves To Get To Liverpool When They Face United

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes the pressure of the title race is getting to Liverpool at the moment and he fully expects Manchester United to take advantage.

The TV pundit believes the Reds’ profligacy in front of goal against Bayern Munich on Tuesday demonstrates there is some nervousness creeping into their performances:

“You have a team that is very confident and a team that is very nervous and are snatching at chances. Look at Liverpool’s game against Bayern Munich – two months ago, they would have scored two or three of those chances.”

“I think United will have a go. They are not a team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that will sit back. They will take the game to Liverpool, and I think the nerves of Liverpool will be too much.”

Sunday’s game at Old Trafford will likely define the Reds’ season. Although the title will not be won or lost against United, it will show what Liverpool are made of.

If they crumble under the pressure, it will give Manchester City a huge boost going into the final few months of the season.

However, if Jurgen Klopp’s side do get a result at United, it will confirm their title credentials and give them a massive surge of belief as they head into the final eleven games of the campaign with a three point lead over their nearest rivals.
