Liverpool legend Steve Nicol believes that re-signing Philippe Coutinho could be the difference in the club’s attempts to overhaul Manchester City at the top of the table next season.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Brazilian in recent days and explaining why making a move for the 27-year-old would be a good idea, Nicol says Coutinho’s goalscoring ability could help the team:

“One of the reasons why I think City did Liverpool last year was because they had more goalscorers. Now you’re adding a goalscorer in Coutinho. That could be that one-point difference.”

Whether Liverpool would be prepared to go back in for Coutinho following his departure eighteen months, it remains to be seen.

It has been claimed that Barcelona may use the Brazilian international as a makeweight in a deal to sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG would be Coutinho’s most likely move if he does leave the Camp Nou, other than Liverpool. Manchester United and Chelsea have also been mentioned as clubs who could be interested, but reports in Spain suggest neither is a likely destination.
