Liverpool are very much in contention to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to Calciomercatoweb.it.

In what they label as an “exclusive”, the Italian website claim that the Reds could enter the bidding for the Uruguayan international, along with the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

They say it is important to “pay attention to Liverpool” who have three forwards (Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino) out of contract at the end of next season. If any of the trio were to leave, it’s likely that Nunez would become a key target.

Other English teams, including Chelsea, Arsenal West Ham and Newcastle have also been mentioned as potential suitors in reports but much will depend on who is prepared to stump up the cash for Nunez.

Benfica are believed to be holding out for at least €80m (£68m), and it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp’s side would be willing to pay that much to secure the 22-year-old’s signature.
