Peter Crouch And Joe Cole Agree On Who Are Favourites To Win The Champions League After Watching Liverpool Last Night

Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch believes that, while the Reds weren’t at their best in the 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid last night, they remain favourites to win the Champions League and Premier League this season:

“I still feel they’re the best team, I think they are favourites to win the Champions League and favourites to win the Premier League.”

When asked whether he agreed with Crouch’s remarks, Joe Cole (another ex-Red) was slightly less emphatic, but he believes that one of the four English teams will become European champions again in May:

“I agree, I said at the start of the year the English teams are favourite for the Champions League and I stand by that. I think Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool more likely than Manchester United. But if it clicks at Manchester United then they will be up there. The four English teams have never been that strong. Liverpool got through a very good Atletico Madrid team, not played at their best and came away with a victory. I don’t think there are any weaknesses in this team. The only thing I can think of will hold them back is they got injuries like last year.”

There were definitely some concerning signs against Atletico. Defensively, the likes of Virgil van Dijk were well off the pace, as their opponents scored twice, as well as creating three or four other clear cut opportunities.

However, Liverpool’s attack is currently the most lethal in Europe, regularly scoring two or three goals a game. It seems manager Jurgen Klopp is looking to roll back the years by employing some ‘heavy metal’ football this season. We shall see if it gets them all the way to the final in St Petersburg next year.
