Poll: Who Should Liverpool Use To Replace Virgil In The Centre Of Defence? Vote Now

Liverpool suffered two big losses in the recent Merseyside derby as not only Thiago Alcantara got injured but crucially Virgil van Dyke was injured for what looks like the season. We explore the options for Jurgen Klopp and poll the choices that Liverpool have – vote below.

One of the recent options to have emerged sees Jamie Carragher suggesting signing RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano in the January transfer window. The French international is only 21 years old and is highly regarded but trying to prise him away from Leipzig could prove impossible unless the Reds splash out £38million to meet the players release clause.

Another option for Liverpool would be to try to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. Man City, Man United and Chelsea were all strongly linked with a move to land the huge Senegalese defender in the summer window. The fee involved for the Napoli man-mountain is supposed to be around £68million but he is 29 years old so spending such big cash to land a player may not be the wisest use of funds especially given that Virgil van Dyke is also 29 already.

The strongest and most cost effective move would be to stick with the options of Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and the versatile Fabinho plus add the impressive starlet Rhys Williams who looked so comfortable in the Ajax Champions League encounter in the week. The 19 year old Williams spent last season at non-league club Kidderminster Harriers but he looked more than ready vs Ajax and he would save the club from splashing big cash in the transfer window.

Two other options seem less likely with Brighton’s Ben White doubtful to be available as Graham Potter sees White as a big part of his seagulls squad while Schalke’s Ozan Kabak is also an option but may be hard to sign mid-season unless the German outfit can find a replacement.
