Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp believes Georginio Wijnaldum could prove vital as the Reds look to go one better than last season and win the Premier League.
The Dutchman scored the only goal in the 1-0 win against Sheffield United on Saturday, and Redknapp thinks the midfielder will need to continue contributing in front of goal when the front three are not scoring:
“He is immense in midfield and if Liverpool are to win the title, their fans will be looking to him to deliver when the front three are not firing.”
The lack of goals from midfield has been a big concern for the Reds over the past couple of seasons. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho don’t generally get on the scoresheet so the onus does fall on Wijnaldum who is a decent finisher.
Certainly, his strike against the Blades wasn’t a particularly good example of that, with Liverpool requiring a big mistake from Dean Henderson to grab the three points.
Even so, Redknapp’s point is a valid one. Wijnaldum has the talent to chip in with more goals and if the Merseyside club are to keep up their good start, they will need goals from right across the pitch.
