Liverpool were one of the clubs who made a formal contract offer to Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Reports in Germany claimed that Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City were vying for the 28-year-old but Romano says that, before Real Madrid won the race for the player, the Reds were very keen on snapping him up:
David Alaba’s pre-contract with Real Madrid is ready since the beginning of January and it’s expected to be signed in the next weeks. His salary will be around €12m [after taxes] per season. #LFC made a top bid to sign him 2 weeks ago but… his dream is called Real Madrid. ⚪️

Although some have disputed the claims of Liverpool’s interest in Alaba, Romano has been insistent for a while that the Reds were keen on signing the defender. Considering he was correct on Thiago Alcantara, there is no reason to think he is wrong this time either.
Manager Jurgen Klopp may be disappointed on losing out on the centre-back but he wouldn’t have been able to help with the current injury crisis at the back, as the Austrian international would have moved on a free transfer at the end of the season anyway.
