Liverpool are still in talks to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, according to Fabrizio Romano. The reliable Italian journalist claims the Reds remain favourites for the 29-year-old’s signature despite recent interest from Manchester United:
Liverpool are still working to get Thiago Alcantara. Bayern are now convinced they’re gonna receive a new bid from #LFC soon. Klopp pushing again for Thiago. Manchester United only had contacts with his agent at the moment – nothing advanced between clubs. ? #Liverpool #Thiago

The longer this drags on, the more chance that other teams will have to try and hijack the deal. United have only made tentative enquiries at this stage, though, and it would be a surprise if they do firm up their interest unless they can offload some midfielders.
With Donny van de Beek expected to join the Red Devils, they will have no less than seven central midfielders in the squad, including Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic, Fred and Andreas Pereira.
Although Liverpool do have a similar number of options in the middle of the park, the future of Georginio Wijnaldum is in serious doubt and the Dutchman’s departure would free up more space in the squad.
