Sadio Mane Makes Frank Admission About Liverpool’s Top Four Ambitions

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane says the Reds are prioritising the Champions League ahead of finishing in the top four this season.

Going into tonight’s game against Wolves, Jurgen Klopp side find themselves eight points off Chelsea in fourth, and Mane says that, while they are still focused on trying to clinch fourth place, their main aim now is to go as far as possible in Europe:

“Being in the top four right now is our main target, but to win the Champions League is our main, main target. It won’t be easy because we are going to face the best teams in Europe, but we are here to beat the best in the world. We will do everything possible to go for it and to win the Champions League.”

It is not a surprising admission from Mane, considering where Liverpool are currently in the table. Even if they do pick up three points at Molineux this evening, they will only go level on points with Everton in sixth, having played a game more.

The Reds would need a lot of results to go their way in the last nine rounds of fixtures for them to make up the ground they need. With that in mind, their best chance of qualifying for next season’s competition may be trying to win the tournament this campaign.
