“Safe As Houses” – BBC Pundit Crooks Hails Liverpool Defender After City Display

BBC pundit Garth Crooks was very complimentary about Joe Gomez’s performance against Manchester City yesterday.

The Liverpool defender switched from centre-back to right-back as Trent Alexander-Arnold made way for Dejan Lovren, with Jurgen Klopp looking to shore up his defence against the threat posed from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Crooks believes the Reds have a very assured player in the 21-year-old:

“Gomez, meanwhile, looked as safe as houses. Whether this young man plays in the centre of defence or as a full-back he is an outstanding defender and one you can rely upon.”

Gomez will likely switch back to centre-half after the international break. Liverpool manager Klopp was clearly fearful of City’s attack in wide areas, and for the most part, the plan to move the England international to full-back paid dividends.

However, the Reds did miss Alexander-Arnold’s attacking threat in the final third of the pitch. Gomez was free on the overlap on a number of occasions but his delivery was inconsistent from crosses.

Defensively, however, he kept Raheem Sterling very quiet and remained tight to Lovren in order to ensure the backline wasn’t exposed to City’s front three.
