Salah closing in on long-standing Premier League record

Mohamed Salah is now only one goal away from becoming the Premier League’s most prolific ever hitman.

The Egyptian international notched his 31st goal of the season at the weekend during the Reds 2-2 draw with bottom side West Bromwich Albion.

And if he can find the net just once more in the remaining three games, the former AS Roma and Chelsea forward will become the league’s highest ever scorer in a 38-game season.

Salah’s strike against the Baggies saw him equal the current record of 31, held by Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez.

Salah has already broken the record for the most games scored in during a Premier League season, having found the net on a whopping 23 separate occasions.

Let go by Chelsea in 2016, the 25-year-old’s sparkling form has come as a surprise for many – but not to Jurgen Klopp who says he knew Salah would be a huge hit at Anfield even before he signed him.

“He’s a very good player and we hoped, we were pretty sure, it would work out, but we couldn’t be 100 per cent sure.”

“What price Mo now? That’s not interesting,” said the Liverpool manager.

“He’s stepped up to make the next step in his development.

“At Roma, he was really, really good and it’s only because England has such a great league that you obviously don’t watch other leagues often enough!

“It’s clear he was really good at Roma and a very, very offensive midfield player. And he’s very cool in front of goal.”
