It appears Liverpool midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum won’t be signing a new contract any time soon. ESPN claims a source has told them that there is a “significant difference” in opinion between the player and the club over personal terms.
There has certainly been no falling out between manager Jurgen Klopp and the Dutchman, though, and the Reds boss is perfectly happy to play him for the rest of the season even if the midfielder does run down his contract, which expires next June.
The situation is very similar to the one when Emre Can left the club in 2018, when he was allowed to leave on a free transfer for Juventus after a year of speculation about his future.
It is thought that Liverpool’s interest in Thiago Alcantara is a result of the uncertainty surrounding Wijnaldum, although there are no suggestions at the moment that the 29-year-old will be leaving Anfield this summer.
