Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold was omitted from the squad for England’s game against Germany last night.
Reds supporters on Twitter have been asked why manager Gareth Southgate continues to favour Chelsea’s Reece James ahead of him and they have come up with various reasons:
Southgate has his favorites

Funny enough that’s where you’re wrong, a rwb in a back 5 doesn’t have that much defensive duties. Southgate just doesn’t know what he’s doing

Trent is never to be compared with recce because Trent is better and more experienced than him.
England should get a good coach.

James is slightly better defensively but trent is miles ahead offensively

You know why, because it has nothing to do with his ability to attack and it’s all to do with his inability to defend well on a consistent basis – and the manager is the most defensive minded bloke on planet who would play 8-1-1 if he could.

Some managers simply don’t favour certain players and unfortunately for Alexander-Arnold, it seems that Southgate is not much of a fan.
He may have to wait until a change of manager before he is given a fair run in the side and, considering England’s performances, it’s likely that a new head coach will be in place after the World Cup.
If Alexander-Arnold isn’t included in the squad for the trip to Qatar, most fans will be pleased that the fullback will be given a month’s rest and, hopefully, he can take out his frustration on other clubs when playing for Liverpool in the second half of the season.
