Star’s Return To Fitness Could Come At A Perfect Time For Liverpool

The news that Alisson Becker is undertaking extra training sessions to be ready for the Manchester United will be welcomed by Liverpool fans. Although Adrian has been a capable number two, to have the first choice goalkeeper back for a such a big game will be a massive boost.

The Brazilian is a top-class goalkeeper, and his presence at Old Trafford could play an important factor if the Red Devils turn up for the game and improve on their recent performances with a derby atmosphere behind them.

If we compare Alisson and Adrian, both are good shot-stoppers but there is one crucial advantage that the Reds’ number one has over his teammate: he saves shots he’s not expected to.

His memorable save against Napoli was crucial for Liverpool to progress into the knockout stages of the Champions League last season, and subsequently to lifting the trophy. There were other notable saves, including his point-blank save from Andre Gomes in the Merseyside derby at Anfield back in December.

Some fans, however, may point out that Adrian made a similarly remarkable stop in the group match versus Napoli this season, when he tipped over Drie Mertens’ shot from close range, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s as good as Alisson.

Of course, judging what constitutes a clear cut chance can be relatively subjective, so with that in mind, it’s always best to look at the numbers and see if there is a tangible difference between the two. And here’s where Liverpool’s no.1 really stands out.

Playing for Liverpool this campaign, Adrian has conceded 13, with an expected goals (xG) conceded figure of 12.89, which means he is pretty average when it comes to saving shots.  His save percentage is a respectable 61.8%.

If we compare that to last season’s performances by Alisson, he conceded 34, with an xG conceded figure of 43.19. It means the 26-year-old should have let in nine more goals last campaign. Combine that with a save percentage of 78.2% and you can see he is on a different level.

Certainly, you shouldn’t look at goalkeepers in isolation as defences can help protect the men in between the posts. The xG conceded has increased this season from 0.87 per game to 1.29 but even so, you would trust Alisson to have the better chance of saving shots even if he is facing a few more than last year.
