“Strong Interest” Ornstein Confirms Liverpool Will Join Clubs Pursuing Bargain Deal For Bundesliga Star

Liverpool are one of the clubs showing a “strong interest” in Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The reliable former BBC reporter claims that Manchester United and Manchester City are also in the running for the 28-year-old, who will leave the Bundesliga when his contract expires at the end of the season:

“He will neither be signing a new contract at Bayern Munich, nor agree to be sold next month, and that makes him a highly sought-after free agent. The Austrian’s long-term preference was Spain but there is also said to be strong interest from the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool.”

Chelsea have also been heavily linked with Alaba, along with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, but the big obstacle to signing the Austrian international will be his sizeable wage demands.

Reports in the Spanish press have claimed that the centre-back is demanding in excess of £200,000 a week, which is a large salary especially for a club like Liverpool who do not generally hand out bumper contracts to players in their late twenties.

The reluctance to give Georginio Wijnaldum a new long-term deal is evidence enough that Alaba is probably unlikely to be heading to Anfield next summer.
