The Top Five Biggest Flops Of The Premier League Era

Anfield Stadium

Splashing huge sums of money on transfers has gone hand in hand with the dramatic increase in TV revenue that resulted from the formation of the Premier League in 1992.

Clubs have spent big in order to improve their squads and overhaul the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal at the top of the table.

Some like Chelsea and Manchester City succeeded, while others failed, but every club have made massive mistakes in the transfer market over the past thirty years. We could have named so many players on this list.

Press the next page as we go through our five best biggest flops in Premier League history.

Eliaquim Mangala

Manchester City spent a grand total of £42m on the French defender when he arrived from Porto in 2014, but it quickly became apparent that he wasn’t cut out for the Premier League.

Injuries and loan spells meant that the centre-back only left the Etihad Stadium permanently last summer, having made 79 appearances for the Citizens over a five year period.

Andy Carroll

The very definition of a panic buy. Liverpool allowed Fernando Torres to leave in the last few days of the 2011 January transfer window and they splashed out a club-record fee on his replacement.

At the time, Carroll was seen as a promising, upcoming striker but injuries plagued his time at the club. He didn’t fit Brendan Rodgers’ style of play when the Northern Irishman was appointed manager and he left for West Ham on loan before joining the Hammers permanently. The Merseyside club made a £20m loss on the player.

Juan Sebastien Veron

The Argentinian playmaker excelled in Italy but his record-breaking £28m move to Manchester United ended up being a complete failure. He excelled in European competitions but he struggled hugely with the pace of the Premier League.

After two seasons, the Red Devils decided to sell Veron at a loss, offloading him to Chelsea for £15m, where he also found life tough before moving back to Italy.

Fernando Torres

The Liverpool forward’s £50m switch to Chelsea in 2011 turned out to be a great piece of business for the Reds with the Spaniard struggling to replicate the sort of form he showed at Anfield.

Torres did have his moments, such as scoring against Barcelona in the Champions League, but his 45 goals in 172 appearances was a very poor return on the amount the Blues paid.

Andriy Shevchenko

The Ukrainian was a very talented footballer and there was massive expectation when he joined Chelsea from AC Milan for £30.8m in 2006. Unfortunately, it became clear early on that his best days were behind him.

Shevchenko was loaned back to the Rossoneri after two seasons. He scored just 22 goals in his three years at Stamford Bridge.
