“There’s Always A Risk…” Glen Johnson Is Worried That Liverpool May Have Signed Their Very Own Timo Werner

Ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson says there is a “risk” that Darwin Nunez could have a similar career in England to Timo Werner.

The German struggled during his two seasons at Chelsea before returning to Germany and, while he still feels Nunez will end up succeeding in the Premier League, Johnson says there remains a possibility that he could end up flattering to deceive:

“I’m confident Nunez will come good. You want a player with a fire in their belly. He’s a bit like Richarlison in that respect. Whether he hits the heights of Diaz we’re yet to see but I think he’s got the potential. There’s always a risk that he could become someone like Timo Werner. Just because a player flourishes away from the Premier League, doesn’t mean they’ll do it straight away.”

Nunez’s situation is a difficult one to judge at the moment. He has already shown he has a goalscorer’s instinct with some of the displays he has put in for the Reds and, as Johnson mentions, his aggression should help him come to terms with the English game.

On the other hand, his technical ability isn’t particularly impressive, and there are concerns that his lack of involvement in build-up play could harm Liverpool’s ability to function in attack.

Nunez is still only 23, though, and he was bought with the future in mind. He may still grow into the role as Liverpool’s leading attacker despite his initial struggles.
