Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn says Liverpool have a “huge opportunity” to finish in the Champions League places this season.
The 7-0 win over Manchester United last weekend has reignited the belief that the Reds can secure a top-four spot and Winterburn feels it is very much still in their grasp:
“Liverpool have surprised everyone this season with their lack of consistency. People say they’ve had a drop in form, and they’ve had a lot of injuries but there’s still real quality within that squad – we saw that against Manchester United. There’s no doubt in my mind that Liverpool will be challenging for fourth place, and they still have a huge opportunity to get there.”
Even a few weeks ago, the chances of finishing fourth looked a distant prospect for Jurgen Klopp’s side but a run of excellent results have managed to get the team back in the fight.
They have kept five clean sheets in a row since the 3-0 defeat to Wolves, picking up 13 points, as well as scoring 13 goals.
Ahead of this weekend’s game against Bournemouth, Liverpool are three points off Tottenham in the final Champions League spot, having played a match less.
Spurs won’t be the only competition for top four, though. Newcastle could go above the Reds, with the Magpies having a game hand, while you can’t rule out Brighton getting into the mix either.
