BT Sport presenter Matt Smith has suggested that Liverpool are stepping up their attempts to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes.

The broadcaster doesn’t usually discuss transfer rumours on Twitter but he spoke out about the Reds’ interest in the Portuguese midfielder on Friday afternoon:

Whether Smith has any inside information on this story, it remains to be seen. Reports in the Portuguese media have been claiming that Jurgen Klopp’s side could be about to begin negotiations over a deal for Nunes, but this is the first time an English source has backed up the rumours.

The 23-year-old is said to be valued at around €50m (£43m) by Sporting, which is unlikely to deter Premier League clubs from making an offer.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Wolves have also been linked with Nunes in recent weeks but, if Smith is to be believed, Liverpool are currently the favourites to secure his services.
