Three Of The Best (And Two Of The Worst) Deadline Day Deals Liverpool Have Made

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool haven’t actually made than many deadline day signings as you may think, but the 2011 January transfer window was certainly one of more memorable due to the flurry of outgoings and incomings before the window closed

With the Reds very unlikely to make any signings before the end of today, we thought it would be good to look back at some of the best (and worst) signings the club have made on deadline day.

We have included both summer and winter transfer windows in our selection and there are certainly some standout transfers on this list.

Press the “next page” as we look at Liverpool’s record on past transfer deadline days.

Luis Suarez

Arriving in a double deadline day deal, along with Andy Carroll in 2011, the Uruguayan proved to be a bargain at just £22.5m from Ajax.

Suarez may have been involved in a lot of controversies during his four years at Anfield, but he will be remembered for his goals, and his individual brilliance. His record of 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds shows what a shrewd piece of business it was.

Javier Mascherano

The Argentinian midfielder arrived at the end of the 2007 January transfer window, and despite having struggled for game time at West Ham, he began to establish as a key first-team player at Anfield.

Mascherano was an integral part of Liverpool’s title challenge in the 2008/09 campaign but he only lasted one more season before leaving under a cloud for Barcelona.

Jerzy Dudek

The Polish goalkeeper arrived late in the 2001 summer transfer window, along with Chris Kirkland, and he went on to make 186 appearances for the Reds.

Dudek won’t go down as one of the Merseyside club’s best goalkeepers but he played a defining role in the 2005 Champions League final, making crucial saves in the penalty shootout to secure Liverpool’s fifth European Cup.

Andy Carroll

The Newcastle forward was brought in as Fernando Torres’s replacement in 2011. Although he made a promising start after his £35m move, the transfer proved to be an expensive failure.

Carroll was signed by Kenny Dalglish but his successor Brendan Rodgers didn’t see a place for him in his starting eleven, and he was shipped out on loan to West Ham before the Reds made a £20m loss on his eventual sale.

Paul Konchesky

Signed in August 2010 during one of the darkest periods of Liverpool’s history, the left-back just wasn’t up to the standards required.

Konchesky was loaned out after Roy Hodgson’s sacking and was sold to Leicester the following summer just 11 months after joining the Reds.
