Dutch football has had a massive influence on the world game. Despite having a population of just £18m, some of the greatest players and managers were born in the small country.
Rinus Michels and his protege Johan Cruyff were exponents of “Total Football”. Cruyff’s influence spread further as he created a dynasty at both Ajax and Barcelona. Barca’s academy still uses the principles that Cruyff laid down and the likes of Pep Guardiola have since followed in his footsteps.
Dutch players have excellent technical skills and great football knowledge. It means they are usually able to adapt to any country they play in. It is not a surprise then that so many have ended up in England.
