REPORT: Klopp Has ‘Asked’ Liverpool To ‘Fork’ Out Over £50M To Sign Euro 2020 Winner

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has “asked” the club’s board to sign Juventus winger Federico Chiesa, according to TuttoJuve.com.

The website claims that the Reds have a “strong interest” in the Italian international, who helped his country win Euro 2020.

It is believed that Klopp would like his team to “fork” out in excess of €60m (£51.5m) in order to secure Chiesa’s services this summer.

Juve are said to be prepared to do a deal for around that price, with the Serie A side effectively putting all of their players up for sale after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Chiesa’s injury does raise questions about why Liverpool would be interested

It should be pointed out that Chiesa only returned from a serious knee injury in November and he has struggled to replicate the sort of form we saw from him before he was sidelined.

Last season, the 25-year-old scored four goals and provided six assists in 33 appearances, which is a rather modest return for someone who could still cost a substantial amount of money.

There are signs that Chiesa is getting back to his best

At the back end of the 2022/23 campaign, Chiesa’s output did noticeably increase, making four goal contributions in his last five league matches for Juventus.

He also scored for Italy in the 3-2 win over the Netherlands last weekend as the Azzurri won third place in the UEFA Nations League. It is, however, a small sample size.

You also have to consider whether Liverpool actually need a player like Chiesa. He usually plays off the left flank for both club and country. With the Reds having the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and even Darwin Nunez who can all play on that side of the pitch, do you really need to spend another €60m on someone who can play in the same position?
