Two games, two cup finals insists Liverpool defender

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson insists the Reds must treat both of their remaining games this season as if they were cup finals.

Liverpool face Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League later this month, in what is set to be one of the biggest nights in the club’s modern history.

However, while expected for their trip to Kiev, Robertson insists his side must also treat their only remaining Premier League fixture with the same importance.

“Effectively, we have got two cup finals now,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“We can’t think about Kiev. We know the media and the fans will be focused on that but for us it’s all about Brighton.”

After the weekend’s loss to Chelsea, Liverpool are in real danger of falling out of the Premier League’s top four right at the death.

Anything less than victory over the Seasiders this weekend would open the door for Chelsea to overtake Jurgen Klopp’s side and steal the remaining Champions League spot.

Liverpool can of course guarantee qualification to Europe’s elite competition next season if they win in Kiev on May 26th, but with Real Madrid in their way, Robertson says they must make sure by beating Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

“We know that if we win our final game we will be in the top four, regardless of how the other results go,” the Scot continued.

“It’s going to be a massive game. Getting in the top four has been our main objective since the start of the season.

“We need to tick that off by beating Brighton. All our work this week will be going towards achieving that.”
