Former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney still believes Liverpool can go “on a run” and secure Champions League qualification this campaign.
The Reds’ 4-1 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend has left them eight points adrift of the top four, but Rooney still feels Jurgen Klopp’s side have it in them to finish the season strongly:
“I have a suspicion that Liverpool might sneak into it, thanks to the quality of their squad and their experience. They’re capable of going on a run.”
With Newcastle, Manchester United and Tottenham all in contention, and with Brighton and Brentford ahead of them in the table, Liverpool’s chances of securing fourth spot are pretty low.
Their main issue has been their away form. The Reds have lost eight of their fourteen matches away from Anfield, which doesn’t bode well for the run-in, where they will probably need nine wins from their last eleven fixtures to have a chance of qualification.
Following their disastrous display at the Etihad, Klopp’s men need to brush themselves off as quickly as possible, especially with Chelsea and Arsenal coming up.
