Who Is Nordi Mukiele? Five Things To Know As Report Claims Liverpool Are ‘Ready’ To Make Move For Defender

Anfield Stadium

Liverpool are “ready” to step up their interest in RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele, according to Le10 Sport.

The French publication claims the Reds are Paris Saint-Germain’s biggest rivals in the race for the 22-year-old who has been in impressive form in the Bundesliga this campaign.

Mukiele has spent the last two seasons in Germany, having gradually become a key first-team player over the past 18 months for Leipzig.

Mukiele came through the academy system in France

The Frenchman started life in Paris FC’s youth ranks before his talent was spotted by Ligue Two side Stade Lavallois. He made his debut as a centre-back in a 1-1 draw against Auxerre in November 2014 only a few weeks after his 17th birthday.

Following his breakthrough into the first team during the 2015/16 season, Mukiele’s performances came to the attention of a number of top-flight teams before he made the switch to Montpellier in the 2017 January transfer window.

He got his big move to Germany after an impressive spell with Montpellier

Mukiele spent just 18 months playing for the Ligue One club. He made his debut against Metz not long after joining the team and played regularly as a centre-back and at right-back.

His impressive displays got him his move to RB Leipzig, who shelled out €16m on the player in the summer of 2018.

Mukiele took a while to settle at Leipzig

The French defender’s first season at the Red Bull Arena did not go entirely to plan. Manager Ralf Rangnick started him in five of the first eight league games of the 2018/19 campaign but he was substituted at half time in the 3-0 win over Hertha Berlin in November 2018.

Mukiele did not start another Bundesliga match until February with Lukas Klostermann being preferred ahead of him at fullback.

He can play in a number of positions

The arrival of Julian Nagelsmann as manager last summer, however, changed Mukiele’s fortunes somewhat. His new head coach has employed him as a right-back, a centre-half and even as a right wingback over the course of this season.

The 22-year-old finished the campaign having made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists.

Mukiele has been on the radar of a number of clubs

His athleticism and ability to play in a wide range of positions has meant the Frenchman has been scouted by a number of different clubs.

In addition to Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid have also been linked with a bid for the player in recent months.
