Why Liverpool Should Enter The Race For Yerry Mina

You could say that it’s been a bit of a busy summer so far at Anfield with Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson all joining the club. You could say in many ways all of these signings were needed, especially the addition of Alisson between the sticks, but is there one position that Liverpool could do with strengthening before the window closes just to ensure they have the required quality all over the pitch?

Liverpool have needed a quality goalkeeper for a long while and have finally addressed this by signing Alisson from Roma but the defence in front of him could do with a further boost if they are to seriously challenge on all fronts this season. A long, drawn out chase finally came to an end in last season’s winter window when Virgil van Dijk swapped Southampton for Liverpool but even though the Dutchman had an impact at the back he could do with a partner, and that man should be Yerry Mina.

Mina, 23, enjoyed a great World Cup with Colombia, starring at the heart of their defence alongside Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez. The Barcelona man is tall, athletic and powerful and these attributes will see him compliment Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Liverpool defence superbly. He’s the right age too, so it could be a partnership that the club can rely on for many years to come. Unibet currently has Liverpool 4/1 second favourites to win the Premier League, and this would shorten with Mina on board.

What Mina also proved himself capable of during the World Cup was being effective in both boxes. He scored three times in Russia, most notably against England which led to the game being decided on penalties, and this will be a big plus for Jurgen Klopp if he’s to recruit the former Palmeiras man. Mina is also confident with the ball at his feet too, which will come in handy as Liverpool look to go from defence to attack as quickly as possible, especially with the counter attacking ability of the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino available.

It certainly seems that Barcelona are willing to let one of the stars of the World Cup leave the club, and so soon after joining too. Mina only made the switch to the Catalan giants in January, but they seem prepared to let him move on. There’s already been talk of interest from various Premier League sides including Everton and big spending Wolves, but surely the lure of Champions League football would convince Mina to head to Anfield?

While Liverpool should be a much stronger outfit this coming season, they would be even better off if they recruited a player such as Yerry Mina. The amount of goals they concede has affected their progress for a long time, but with the addition of Alisson and potentially a centre half such as Mina, they could become a defensively sound team that scores goals for fun. This would put them in a great position to challenge for the title. So anyone who fancies Klopp to really take on Manchester City should visit any number of betting sites to place their bets, before the transfer window closes this week.
