Liverpool are expected to bid for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the January transfer window, according to Sport.

The Catalan publication claims the Reds will “enter the picture” for the Dutchman, with the player keen on leaving the Camp Nou after being relegated to the bench:

Manchester United agreed an €85m (£74m) fee for de Jong in the summer, while Chelsea were also heavily linked with the player, so it remains to be seen whether either club will compete with Liverpool for the midfielder’s signature.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp desperately needs to add reinforcements in the middle of the park. Arthur Melo has been ruled out for several months after undergoing surgery on a groin injury, while the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have also spent the start of the season on the treatment table.

With all three players also expected to leave Anfield at the end of the campaign, bringing in someone like de Jong in January would also help strengthen the squad for the long term.
