‘Here We Go!’ Liverpool Midfielder Set To Join Bundesliga Club On Free Transfer

Midfielder Naby Keita is set to join Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen upon the expiration of his current Liverpool contract, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano in a post on his Twitter page.

Liverpool have since confirmed the move on their official club website. Keita will sign a three-year deal with Die Werderaner, which will last until June 2026.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Naby Keita will join Werder Bremen as free agent, here we go! Agreement in place on three year deal valid until June 2026.”

Will Liverpool miss Naby Keita?

For all of Naby Keita’s talents and natural ability, he has been something of a fringe player for Liverpool over the last couple of seasons in the Premier League.

Last season, Keita made just eight appearances in the Premier League, scoring no goals and failing to register a single assist. It isn’t all his own fault, however – he spent much of the 2022/23 campaign sidelined with injuries.

Nevertheless, his susceptibility to being injured made him somewhat of a liability – a player who never plays is no good to anyone. Therefore, a transfer for the player makes sense – even if the Reds will now recoup none of the £48 million fee they paid for him back in 2018.

Naby Keita career summary

Born in Conakry, Guinea in 1995, Keita joined the youth academy of Horoya when he was just nine years of age. In 2013, he attracted attention from French club Istres, who snapped him up after unsuccessful trials with the likes of FC Lorient and Le Mans.

In 2014, he moved to Red Bull Salzburg, which ultimately resulted in a transfer to RB Leipzig in 2016. He went on to score 14 goals in 58 appearances for Die Roten Bullen, before Liverpool activated his release clause in 2018.

His time with the Reds was mixed – he won both the Premier League and the Champions League during his stay in Merseyside, but often found himself injured – the next chapter of his career will take place back in Germany.
