Liverpool and Chelsea have joined Real Madrid in pursuing Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong, according to Depor.

The Spanish publication claims that the two Premier League clubs have “entered the bidding” for the former Manchester City and Celtic player.

Frimpong has been thriving at Leverkusen since the appointment of Xabi Alonso midway through last season. The Dutchman racked up 20 goal contributions from wingback during the 2022/23 campaign and he is accumulated another 12 since then.

Depor claim that Alonso wants to bring the 22-year-old with him if he does replace Carlo Ancelotti as Real boss next summer, but the involvement of Liverpool and Chelsea will complicate matters.

Frimpong has been on the radar of numerous Premier League teams

The fullback has been regularly linked with English clubs over the past 12 months. It is believed that Manchester United and even Arsenal have taken a look at the player.

Now, though, it appears Liverpool could be involved in a three-way battle for Frimpong’s signature ahead of the January transfer window.

Where would Frimpong fit into Liverpool’s starting XI?

The Reds certainly have room for a backup right-back, with Joe Gomez having to cover when Trent Alexander-Arnold is not available.

However, Frimpong is not going to be sold on the cheap, and it is difficult to believe that Jurgen Klopp’s side would spend a massive sum on someone who will not be a guaranteed starter.

If Liverpool do make a concerted effort to sign Frimpong, either in January or at the end of the season, it may suggest that Alexander-Arnold will move into midfield on a permanent basis.

The vice-captain is already playing there in an England shirt, having started both matches for the Three Lions during the international break. For Liverpool, his hybrid role means he is also taking up plenty of central positions when in possession.
