Liverpool would be Kylian Mbappe’s favoured destination over other Premier League clubs, according to ESPN journalist Julian Laurens.
While he still believes that Real Madrid are the frontrunners to sign the France international on a free transfer next summer, Laurens claims the Reds would have a “headstart” if he chooses to move to England instead:
“I think Liverpool have a case to put forward, especially if he is a free agent. Every big club in England should go for him and he will choose where he feels is best for him. His mum is a big fan of Liverpool, he likes Liverpool, he likes what Liverpool have done under Jurgen Klopp.”
“Maybe they have a little headstart, not over Real Madrid, but over other English clubs, City, Arsenal, United, Chelsea, Spurs. There’s a lot of money to pay his wages and a signing on fee, if they had the money or some sort of proposal for him, he would certainly listen.”
Mbappe’s salary would be a big obstacle for Liverpool
As Laurens mentions, the main stumbling block for Jurgen Klopp’s side would be the Frenchman’s salary. According to Capology, the forward is earning a staggering €72m a year at PSG, which works out at around £1.2m a week.
That is nearly 3.5 times more than the Reds’ current highest earner, Mo Salah, who is earning £350,000 a week.
Could Mbappe be Salah’s replacement?
With Salah being courted by clubs in Saudi Arabia, there is a good chance that the Egyptian international will leave Anfield for the Middle East next summer.
Liverpool will be keen to find someone who can replace the goals that Salah provides. Mbappe would, of course, be the ideal candidate but there are plenty of reasons why it won’t happen. For now, Reds fans can still dream that a transfer could be possible.
